Rahul Gandhi – India’s Confucius

Rahul Gandhi is touring India like no politician in India has done before him.  He is making speeches and answering questions all over the country.  I appreciate what he does because for the most part his comments are unifying and optimistic in nature.  But unfortunately some of his recent comments on the caste system and religion have shown that he is out of touch with reality and the opinions of the vast majority of the Indian public.

At a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram recently he mentioned that “I personally don’t believe in caste system.  I go to a human being’s house and not a Dalit’s house”. He added “the frame of Dalit is your frame, not mine.  I ask my office to arrange for my visit to a poor person’s home in the poorest village.  You see him as a Dalit, I see him as a poor person.  When I go to a tea stall I don’t ask him whether he is a Dalit, the difference is in the opportunities. They are as intelligent and as smart as you, but had no opportunity to go to a university – that is the only difference”.  I have no reasons to doubt what he says.  But Rahul Gandhi the person cannot separate himself from Rahul Gandhi the politician.

Rahul Gandhi is the most important member of the ruling Congress Party.  This is the party that has ruled India for most of its history.  The Congress Party is also the architect of the caste based reservation system as it exists today.  At every opportunity the Congress Party has expanded the caste based reservation system and not taken any steps to roll it back.  So how can you be a member of a party that believes in caste based society as evidenced by its policy but then claim that you personally do not believe in a caste system?  When it comes to politicians people really do not care about personal opinions but the politicians voting records and the policy of the party he or she represents.

If he is serious about caste then Rahul Gandhi should stop lecturing the press and then talk to Sonia Gandhi (his mom and the second most powerful person in India) and then the two of them should meet the Prime Minister of India (the third most powerful person in India).  NOTE: I am assuming that all of you know by now that Rahul Gandhi is the most powerful man in India today.  I am confident that between the three of them they can come up with a policy that will eventually stop the Indian central and state governments from discriminating people based on their caste.  NOTE: There is racism in America today but not like it was in the 1960’s when segregation was legal in many states.  The civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King forced the US government and many state governments to change laws.  The moral of the story is that laws have to change first.  Society may or may not follow immediately but that is not something that government can control.

In a recent meeting with students at Aligarh Muslim University Rahul Gandhi said that “Religion does not matter when it comes to becoming the prime minister and a Muslim can get the top job provided he is the most capable person for it”.  He added “it is not about what religion or community you come from, it is what you bring to the table, what capability you have”.   Most Indians instinctively know that they have zero chance of getting elected to city council leave alone to the post of the Prime Minister of India.  This is because most of us are honest, hardworking and are struggling to make ends meet.  We are not willing to lie, steal or commit a violent crime which is what is needed if you want to be a politician in India.  Most Indians unfortunately do not have the family connections or famous last names that people like Rahul Gandhi enjoy.

Rahul Gandhi’s response to the students shows how upside down his thought process is.  India is country which has about 150 million Muslims.  According to Rahul Gandhi not a single Indian Muslim in the past 63 years had what it takes to become the Prime Minister of India (it is what you bring to the table, what capability you have)?  10 out of the 17 Prime Ministers of India are either members of the Gandhi family or individuals who had very close ties with the Gandhi family including Manmohan Singh (frankly my personality would not allow me to do what he is doing which is to basically allow Sonia Gandhi to be the back seat driver).  The rest of the 7 Prime Ministers (belonging to the BJP, Janatha Party and Janatha Dal) have ruled India for a combined 12 years only!!

Indian politicians should understand that outside of politics Indians of all walks of life (including Muslims) have shown what they are capable of doing.  India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world in spite of the corrupt politicians and their governments.  The current system of government which encourages dynastic rule and cronyism prevents high caliber Indians from running for politics irrespective of their religious affiliations.

“The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell” – Quote from the “real” Confucius who was a wise man from China.

You are right. He is in the news all the time but has not really taken on the leadership of any serious issues other than campaigning for his party.

he is just the lucky prince who’s doing all the right noises. All he needs to do is talk and not implement what he’s talking. i do see a gr8 potential in him, but no point in only having a potential and not doing anything abt it! right now its only lip service!

And as you said, only a^& lickers of the Gandhi family can survive in congress. best example for me is the current great President of india! would like to see her resume one day!

    • Hari says:

He has deliberately stayed away from hot button issues. We do not know where he stands on Kashmir, India-China border issue, soaring budget deficit, financial or political reforms etc. He always talks about issues that most people agree on.
