Mamata Banerjee is Unfit to be Cabinet Minister

As most of us know India is going though a phase of coalition politics.  Coalition politics has its advantages and disadvantages.  Many individuals and parties have a seat at the table.  Decisions that are made by the government have a better chance of being successful because many parties are involved in the decision making process.  But coalition politics can have major disadvantages.  The government is at the mercy of small parties and their own political agendas.  There is a danger of the government grinding to a halt.

The behavior of the Union Minister for Railways and the Chief of the Trinamool Congress, Mamata Banerjee in the past few weeks is appalling.  The Indian Railways is extremely important to India.  It is the largest employer in the world and has its own budget that is separate from the Union budget.  The fact that Mamata Banerjee has been offered the Cabinet position shows the important role her party plays in the Congress Party lead United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Over the past few weeks there are many reports that indicate that Mamata Banerjee is spending an enormous amount of time in her home state of West Bengal and not paying enough attention to what is going on with the Indian Railways.  During this time there have been numerous attacks on the Indian Railways by the Maoists that has resulted in the death of over 200 innocent passengers.   The union cabinet minister in such circumstances should step up and lead and oversee the rescue operations and make sure that state and national government agencies are doing their best to support the Indian Railways.

But her leadership has been very passive.  Instead of being the voice of those passengers who have died or injured she has chosen the occasion to show her unhappiness with the ruling coalition.  After the Jhargram train disaster (over 148 passengers were killed) she decided to place the blame on her political rivals and completely contradicted the Home Minster P Chidambaram’s statement.  He had pointed to the Maoists rebels as the culprits based on initial intelligence.

To add fuel to the fire the Railway Minister decided to skip the Cabinet Meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh on the Jharkhand issue.  At the end of the meeting the cabinet decided to impose President’s rule in Jharkhand.  President’s rule is a very sensitive issue in India and the Prime Minister was probably hoping for all the support he can get before making such an important decision.

Asked why she did not attend the meeting Mamata Banerjee said that the cabinet meeting was “only for Jharkhand” and she did not attend because she had “some serious job” to attend to.  What is more important for a cabinet minister than a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister of India regarding the future of a state government?  Anyone who has to work for a living knows exactly what Mamata Banerjee is trying to do.  This is nothing but a form of insubordination.  It is about thumbing your noose at authority.

This is unacceptable and extremely unprofessional.  This is also rather surprising coming from a politician who has so far done a poor job of managing the Indian Railways.  I expected a little more humility.  She said “They want to create some confusion between the two parties (Congress and Trinamool) but I can assure you there is no difference between the Trinamool and the government… I have great respect for the Prime Minister”.  Saying that she has great respect for the Prime Minister does not mean anything.  She has to show it and at a critical juncture she let the Prime Minister hanging.
